The period between approximately the 6th to 1st centuries BC saw the composition and redaction of the two most influential Indian epics, the Mahabharata and the Ramayana, with subsequent redaction progressing down to the 4th century AD. In ancient China, early literature was primarily focused on philosophy, historiography, military science, agriculture, and poetry. China, the origin of modern paper making and woodblock printing, produced the world’s first print cultures. Much of Chinese literature originates with the Hundred Schools of Thought period that occurred during the Eastern Zhou Dynasty (769‒269 BC). The most important of these include the Classics of Confucianism, of Daoism, of Mohism, of Legalism, as well as works of military science (e.g. Sun Tzu’s The Art of War, c.5th century BC)) and Chinese history (e.g. Sima Qian’s Records of the Grand Historian, c.94 BC).

Le Guin is credited with championing the literary and artistic value of science fiction and fantasy, as well as encouraging more women to write and read fiction in both genres. At the same time, she inspired many readers and writers of color by placing nonwhite characters at the center of her work and by tackling issues of racial injustice and colonialism in nuanced ways. Through lifelong interests in mythology, anthropology, feminism and Taoism, as well as through her wide-ranging translations, essays, poetry and nonfiction, Le Guin demonstrated that no writer needed to be limited by the boundaries of any genre. With its historically rich and culturally diverse curriculum, Literary Arts and Studies provides students with a broad and synthetic understanding of a particular period, genre, movement or issue in literary study. It reinforces the development of keen critical thinking and reading skills, an effective and individual writing voice, and a deep and nuanced understanding of the role of literature in a range of different cultures and historical periods.

Room 201 is Twelve Literary Arts’ series of youth residencies provided to public, private, and charter schools, libraries, and other educational institutions across Northeast Ohio. The workshops are led by experienced teaching artists and are designed to develop students in the world of literary arts at varying writing levels. The Literary Arts Department offers an inventive and intensive exploration of the art and practice of creative writing. Our program is a comprehensive, dynamic, and innovative introduction to literary genres, styles, and techniques driven by a faculty who are both dedicated teachers and practicing, published writers. Rigorous, craft-oriented writing workshops—with literature and literary analysis folded into the curriculum—comprise the core of our program. Through InsideOut’s creative writing programs, students learn to think broadly, create bravely, and share their voices with the wider world.

The lack of surviving texts about the Greek and Roman religious traditions have led scholars to presume that these were ritualistic and transmitted as oral traditions, but some scholars disagree that the complex rituals in the ancient Greek and Roman civilizations were an exclusive product of an oral tradition. We offer all people of good will the opportunity to explore, learn, and grow with like-minded writers, students, and appreciators of written words that honor the Trinitarian God. They reminds us that there is beauty and joy in language, that others have insights worth paying attention to, that in our struggles we are not alone.
